When planning your lights for your living room attempt to arrange the lights according to the different uses of the room. If someone is reading or using a laptop in the corner (like I am now), then localised lighting should be used.

Try and make lights directional where possible to concentrate their light on where you need it, that way you can have less powerful bulbs. Energy efficient bulbs come in lots of different sizes and can now be used in free standing lamps, as well as the main light fitting in the room.
