Just about everyone who has owned a CD gets to the point in that Cd’s life where it won’t play anymore. Most of the time, we just throw these away and buy a new one. Well instead of throwing them away, why not try one of these cool and unique ideas for those old and broken CDs.
- Drop Spindle for Spinning Wool- You will need two CDs, a dowel around 12-16 inches long, rubber tubing and a small metal hook. Take these and place the rubber tubing around the dowel and place it into the center of the CD. Push the CDs down the dowel about 4 inches down. Screw the metal hook into the top and spin.
- Christmas Light Reflectors- Use a size C-7 clear colored bulb and put it through the middle of the CD. These look great on wooden stakes lining the sidewalk.
- Candle Display- Take the cd and place it shiny side up and then simple place a pillar or votive candle on top.
- Wall Decorations- Hang them up on the walls as borders or put them around mirrors or windows.
- Coasters- To do this simply take the old cds and cover one side in felt.

Recycling seems like such a basic thing but many people still don’t do it. Today I wanted to share some tips of things that could be recycled as well as simple plans that can be put into place to recycle more goods.
- Recycling Bins: These are great and many cities already offer them with their trash pick up. This will give you the ability to recycle without having to take the stuff to a special place.
- Use Fact Sheets: Knowledge is power, know what you can recycle. Some of the things that are recyclable are glass, paper products, plastic grocery bags, plastics, aluminum, cardboard, tin cans, scrap metal, motor oil, ink cartridges, household appliances, computer equipment, aseptic packaging, Styrofoam, tires, and athletic shoes.
- Recycle Content: When you go to your favorite retailer, demand products that are made of recycled materials. Make sure you are buying the products that have a higher recycled material content.
- Use Natural Fertilizers: Start you own compose pile and use leaves as fertilizers for your garden and flowers.
- Properly Dispose of Hazardous Waste: Disposing of these dangerous materials is important to keeping the Earth clean and water sources safe. These hazardous materials include household cleaners, building materials, automotive products, pesticides and batteries.

Swishing is a new concept that has recently been launched where you get friends together to exchange fashionable clothes. You benefit the environment by reducing the amount of new products you buy, in addition, you benefit from a new wardrobe and new friends!

If you haven’t heard about Freecycling, it’s basically a way of avoiding sending rubbish to landfill. In the same way you donate items to charity shops, you donate potentially bulky but useful items that you no longer want to other people. There’s no money exchanging hands, it’s completely free!

Printers have come on a long way in the last 10 years, but ink cartridges are a significant source of waste. Often containing a mixture of chemicals, plastics and metals, cartridges are not eco-friendly. However, there are now many initiatives that allow you to recycle and refill ink cartridges.

Junk mail is a really irritating problem. In the UK, we get swamped with flyers about cable and satellite TV packages, pizza, indian, chinese and other takeaway menus, extortionately expensive education packages promising to “double our income”, supermarket special offers, and more. Admittedly, sometimes these offers are useful, most of the time they end up in the recycling bin.

Although many councils and cities are getting better with their recycling of waste products, they’ve still got a long way to go when it comes to recycling plastics. The majority of plastics are still not recyclable yet. Given how many food products use plastic containers, that’s a hell of a lot of waste we’re still sending to landfill.

Microwaveable ready-meals… right, where to start!? Ready-meal packaging is usually not recyclable, perhaps except the cardboard box or sleeve. The meals are poor in nutritional value due to the over-cooking and freezing process, lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and proteins. If you have a large appetite like me, the small portions will leave you snacking a few hours later. They contain too much sugar and salt to add flavour to the poor-tasting food in the packet, not forgetting all of the preservatives and additives. That enough yet?

… and use a mug. It’s not much, but simply changing the way you have your morning coffee can have a real impact on the amount of waste you send to the landfill. It’s also carbon intensive to make styrofoam and paper cups.

Recycling your old materials is only half the battle. However, it’s said that if you’re not buying recycled products, you’re not recycling. Most packaging is being created with some “post-consumer content” (recycled materials), but it can be as little as 1%.
