Eco-Friendly Soy Candles

Soybeans are a renewable resource, grown right here in the United States. The production of soy wax candles greatly benefits the American agricultural economy. If soy wax replaced paraffin wax an estimated 60 million pounds of soybeans would be needed for annual candle production. On the other hand, paraffin candles are a by-product of oil refining thereby relying on foreign crude oil markets for manufacture.

Eventually the production of paraffin wax will likely disappear (or become very cost prohibitive) as we deplete the world’s oil reserves. However, soy wax is a sustainable and renewable resource, thereby helping our environment.

Soy wax myth: “Soy wax is 100% soot free”

Many soy wax candle manufacturers claim that their candles are 100% soot free. Unfortunately, anything that burns releases a minimal amount of hydrocarbons (soot), though this can be greatly reduced by a well-made candle. Using the right wick (no metal!) and keeping it trimmed will help reduce soot.

Candle dyes, additives and synthetic fragrances are the primary factors that increase soot and should be avoided (i.e. a soy wax candle made with dyes & perfumes will create more soot than one without those unnecessary ingredients).
