Junk mail is a really irritating problem. In the UK, we get swamped with flyers about cable and satellite TV packages, pizza, indian, chinese and other takeaway menus, extortionately expensive education packages promising to “double our income”, supermarket special offers, and more. Admittedly, sometimes these offers are useful, most of the time they end up in the recycling bin.
To avoid getting addressed junk mail, in the UK you can sign up to the free Mailing Preference Service (related to the Telephone Preference Service for avoiding sales phone calls). However, this doesn’t stop people putting flyers through your door.
If you want to do something a little more artistic with your junk mail, make furniture, make your own paper or create mulch, then check out these great ideas from ProQuo: Top 10 Creative Responses to Junk Mail.

The best way to stop unaddressed junk mail (i.e. the stuff you can’t stop by registering with the Mailing Preference Service) is by registering with Royal Mail’s door-to-door opt-out (simply send an e-mail with your name and full address to optout@royalmail.com) and sticking a ‘no junk mail’ sign on your letterbox. Lots and lots and lots more free and objective info about how to stamp out junk mail is available on http://www.stopjunkmail.org.uk.
Thanks for that Robert. I had wondered if there was a Royal Mail centric solution to all the junk mail.
